On leaving school at sixteen, the convent-educated author worked for the Bank of England as a clerk. Charlotte continued her education by taking advantage of the B of E's enormous library during her lunch breaks and after work.

She later worked as a secretary for the British Broadcasting Corporation.

While there, she met and married Richard Holland, a political reporter. A voracious reader of romance novels, she began writing at her husband's suggestion. She wrote her first book in three days — with three children underfoot! In between raising her five children including a set of twins , Charlotte wrote several more novels. Charlotte was a true revolutionary in the field of romance writing. One of the first writers to explore the boundaries of sexual desire, her novels often reflected the forefront of the 'sexual revolution' of the s.

Her books touched on then-taboo subjects such as child abuse and rape, and she created sexually confident — even dominant — heroines.

She was also one of the first to create a modern romantic heroine: Known for her swiftness as well as for her skill in writing, Charlotte typically wrote a minimum of two thousand words per day, working from 9: While she once finished a full-length novel in four days, she herself pegged her average speed at two weeks to complete a full novel.

Charlotte Lamb passed away in October at the age of sixty-two.

She is greatly missed by her many fans, and by the romance writing community. You are viewing this site in an old browser or Internet Explorer compatiblity mode. You can continue to use our site but it may not work properly or display correctly.

While I have liked some of Charlotte Lamb's other books better, this was a decent read. I like a jealous and possessive hero who chases the woman he wants and so I liked that about this book. Muir was not letting Cathy get away from him, no matter how far she ran.

He strong armed her into marrying him.

The only thing that bothered me was the ending. There was no epilogue.

No words of love or the future. Rather it was an abrupt HFN.

I re-read this book over and over again. It was good. Back Cover: It was more than a holiday romance!

Love had flared quickly and passionately between Cathy and Muir. But she was committed to another man who needed her and deserved her loyalty.

Their parting was full of recriminations, and he refused to accept Cathy's decision not to meet again. A man of dangerous impulses and fierce emotions, he insisted on changing her mind in a way that caused tragedy for both. My Review: Cathy has to fill in on a conference for a week for another employee. She meets Muir, the hero, while there.

They seem to get along well but she fails to tell him that she is an engaged woman and has been for the last two years. Muir would like to take their relationship to the next level and is trying to figure out how they can continue to see each other because they don't exactly live in the same town.

She hadn't been wearing her engagement ring because it was sent out to be fixed. She really didn't set out to dupe Muir but it appears that she did.

He eventually follows her home and rapes her. Yeah in the end she capitulated, but before that she fought him: Afterwards she is crying and he tells her not to cry she tells him that he forced her to make love to him and she hated it. Muir then pushed her away from him. They were standing at the top of the stairs as that is where he took her at, she fell down the stairs and once she hits the bottom her father is there to rescue her.

If that wasn't enough to make this story un-PC then Muir further threatens violence upon the woman he claims to love and blames her for so many things. Muir never admits it was rape, he does say it was force though. He ends up blackmailing her into marrying him and living with him until they do get married, however by the end of the story they still haven't wed. There was no clear cut reason as to why Muir would treat her like he did, my guess is that his love for her was obsessive and all consuming that he really didn't mean to hurt her but he just couldn't help himself.

Well okay, he did want to hurt her for a bit because of her claiming rape by saying he made her do it - he was arrested and she denied knowing him.

This was one of those books that you can sit and discuss with others to get their perspectives and still wonder about. Read this because it was recommended in some discussions.

Up till the rape I liked it but after that and the whole sadistic hate thing I just couldn't anymore. I guess it was 3 stars till then.Series The Marriage Maker 1.
